Glastonbury, Connecticut
Glastonbury is a midsized town in Hartford County, Connecticut near Manchester, Newington, New Britain, Wethersfield, Hebron, and Bolton. The town is located about seven miles southeast of Hartford, the capital of Connecticut and the “Insurance Capital of the World”. Glastonbury is home to a number of emerging technology businesses, including green technology and environmentally focused companies, as well as Internet and telecommunication companies.
Each fall, Glastonbury joins surrounding towns like Windsor, Bloomfield, and Enfield in holding “pick your own” apple days. The Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce hosts the Apple Harvest Festival each October, which brings families, businesses, and visitors together for three days of fun. Glastonbury also holds the Glastonbury Art Walk, which connects local artists with area businesses that display the artists’ creations in order to showcase the creative and innovative talents of the town.
An interesting historic site to visit is the Rocky Hill – Glastonbury Ferry, which is the oldest operating ferry in the United States dating back over 350 years to a time when both towns were part of Wethersfield. The Rocky Hill – Glastonbury Ferry carries approximately 400 people each day across the Connecticut River, as well as bicycles and vehicles. The ferry connects Hartford and Middletown, eliminating a 13-mile drive.
Glastonbury is connected to neighboring towns, such as New Britain and Manchester, by a number of highways, making visiting the town easy. Connecticut Route 3 connects Glastonbury with Wethersfield, Route 17 has two exits in Glastonbury—the New London Turnpike and Hubbard Street—and Connecticut Transit buses connect Hartford and Wethersfield to Glastonbury via Main Street and Hebron Ave.
